Chan Chan - Buena Vista Social Club

The history of the Buena Vista Social Club is intricate, fascinating and largely unknown. It takes you back to the 1940s in Havana, Cuba, where the revolutionary moment of popular Latin American music was forming at the hand of dozens of local musicians gathering to play together for no profit but only for the love of playing. The Cuban Revolution led to the club’s closure in the 1950s and, almost fifty years later, veteran musicians from the original club reformed to record the inspired album: Buena Vista Social Club.

This album takes me to a nostalgically less exotic environment: I always listen to it whilst mowing the lawn in the Summer, so I can give my (perhaps convincing) pigeon-Spanish some volume.

God, I want to go to Cuba so badly.
